This chapter introduces MATLAB functions that have widespread and important uses in statistics and data analysis; however, their proper application requires informed judgment and experience. Section 7.1 gives an introduction to basic statistics and probability, including histograms, which are specialized plots for displaying statistical results. The normal distribution that forms the basis of many statistical methods is covered in Section 7.2. Section 7.3 covers random number generators and their use in simulation programs. Section 7.4 covers interpolation methods, including linear and spline interpolation. Table 7.5-1 is a guide to the functions introduced.
Now that you have finished this chapter, you should be able to use MATLAB to
- Solve basic problems in statistics and probability.
- Create simulations incorporating random processes.
- Apply interpolation to data.
